I’d hoped that this “What I’m Reading Post” would be a book review but alas it’s not. I had that hope because this book is scheduled to be released today in the U.S. and the publisher sent me an ARC, and I’ve had it a while, and I usually try to get reviews for ARCs posted before the book comes out if not weeks before it comes out. But I didn’t. Because I’m still reading it. Because I’m behind. Because life.
Anyway, the least I can do is get a What I’m Reading post put together to go live on the day the book releases. That’s something right? So what am I reading? Well…it’s The Dragon of Jin-Sayeng by K.S. Villoso.
The stunning finale to the Chronicles of the Bitch Queen trilogy where the queen of a divided land must unite her people against the enemies who threaten to tear her country apart. K. S. Villoso is a “powerful new voice in fantasy.” (Kameron Hurley)
Queen Talyien is finally home, but dangers she never imagined await her in the shadowed halls of her father’s castle.
War is on the horizon. Her son has been stolen from her, her warlords despise her, and across the sea, a cursed prince threatens her nation with invasion in order to win her hand.
Worse yet, her father’s ancient secrets are dangerous enough to bring Jin Sayeng to ruin. Dark magic tears rifts in the sky, preparing to rain down madness, chaos, and the possibility of setting her nation aflame.
Bearing the brunt of the past and uncertain about her future, Talyien will need to decide between fleeing her shadows or embracing them before the whole world becomes an inferno.

I can’t tell you how excited I was to receive a copy of this book in the mail a while back. I’ve been a big fan of this series and of K.S. Villoso’s storytelling. The Chronicles of The Bitch Queen started out as a self-published series but was picked up by Orbit in what is yet another example of traditional publishing recognizing the talent and great stories found in self-publishing these days.
I read both the self-published edition and the Orbit edition of The Wolf of Oren-Yaro. I loved that book and I fell in love with Queen Talyien’s character. Tali has become one of my absolute favorite protagonists because of the nuance and complexity with which she is written. Plus she’s just cool as hell. Er…you know what I mean. I just recently read The Ikessar Falcon and that love for Tali and this story just deepened. You can read my review for The Wolf of Oren-Yaro here, and the review for The Ikessar Falcon here.
I’m maybe 25 percent of the way through The Dragon of Jin-Sayeng and so far it’s as good or better than the previous two. The stakes have been raised even higher and I’m nervous and excited about what’s gonna happen. Nervous because Villoso is known to not be super kind to her characters and excited because the story is just really really good.
I hope to have a review ready sometime this coming weekend. In the meantime, if you haven’t started this series and you’re looking for a good character driven fantasy with action and drama and a love quadrangle then check this one out. It’s a fabulous Asian inspired fantasy that I don’t think you’ll want to miss.
Oh…before I’m done can I also say how much I FREAKING LOVE THAT COVER!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I’ve loved every cover to the books in this series but this one is hands down my favorite and just a favorite cover altogether. Each one has Tali looking like that fierce queen who will cut you as soon as look at you but this one?!?! Wow…I really wouldn’t want standing below her and on her bad side at that moment.
Have you read any of the Chronicles of The Bitch Queen? If so what did you think? Have you started The Dragon of Jin-Sayeng or plan to? Let me know in the comments.
