It’s time for another What I’m Reading Post. Why? Well, because I’m reading something and I thought I’d tell you about it. And…well…it’s also because I didn’t get that review finished that I started over the weekend and it’s been like a week since I posted anything so I’m posting this. And Because these are much easier for me than a full on review. Is it laziness? Maybe. I also seem to just be in a review writing funk that I need to figure out how to get out of. Until I do you can expect more of these kinds of posts because at least I’m saying something about the book. And that’s good right?
My Current Read
Shadowless, by Randall McNally
“What if the gods themselves wanted you dead?
A young boy lies on a beach on a warm summer’s day. While trying to block the sun from his eyes Arpherius makes a shocking discovery; he has no shadow. Confused and bewildered he asks his uncle why he is shadowless. What he learns is a terrifying secret that will change his life forever.
Set in the Northern Realms, Shadowless is a fantasy novel about individuals born without a shadow. Spawned by the malevolent deities of this world these children of the gods are persecuted at every turn. Hunted by the high priests who carry out the wishes of their gods, hunted by the Shadow Watchers; armed soldiers who are assigned to each temple, and hunted by the gods themselves.
Part-mortal and part-god, the Shadowless live for centuries and face a battle for survival, constantly on the run or hiding in far-flung corners of the Northern Realms.
Soon their lives and fates become intertwined, expedited by the mysterious monk Amrodan. Driven by a series of visions Amrodan travels through the Northern Realms, seeking out the Shadowless and trying to enlist their help to take a stand and fight back against the gods.” – Goodreads blurb
I was sent a copy of this book by the author *checks notes* a WHILE back. OK, yeah it was a long while. I knew when I received it I couldn’t get to it for a couple months but then it become more than that. I say all that to point out my failure to pick this one up before this week is all on me. Oh and did I mention McNally sent me a hardcover edition? You don’t often get hardcover self-published books so that was exciting.
Anyway, about the book. I wanna say something first about the cover. I’m something of a sucker for cover art and it will totally impact my decision to purchase a book. I say that without shame. And this one rocks. The grayscale artwork really hints at something a bit more grimdark which is plus for me. Then there’s the whole Greek, Clash of The Titans vibe and cheesy as those movies were I’m here for it.
As for the story, we’ll that’s where it gets even more interesting. This isn’t a traditional narrative from beginning to end. Instead each chapter is it’s own short story with it’s own different shadowless POV character. There are 20 chapters, a prologue and an epilogue. I’m not very far into the book yet so I’m still guessing, but I’m thinking each chapter will also reveal some small piece of what will be the overall linked narrative. I’ll confirm when I finish and get that review up. Eventually.
The writing so far is good. The stories have kept my interest. There’s some dark and serious elements and maybe a touch of humor. But like I said I’m only a little way into this one so wait to see if that all holds true.
I’m excited to finish this one and I hope the format holds up and doesn’t wear thin. One concern I have is that I won’t ever attach to or feel for a character because I’m only with them for a short time. We’ll see.
Anyone else read this one? Anyone considering it? Let me know in the comments.
