It’s been a few weeks since I had a new What I’m Reading post go up. This is primarily due to the fact that the last three books I’ve read have been for #SPFBO and I’m trying not to advertise my reading for the contest ahead of time. You’ll probably only see cross-posts for #SPFBO reviews on this site since the official team site is Beth Tabler’s Before We Go Blog.

But…I’m done reading my first batch of #SPFBO books which means I have a little time to do some regular reading before I have to focus on the next phase. Which is good because I’m waaaaaayyyyyyy behind on my other reading. This book has been on my TBR since the beginning of the year when it came out. It’s the follow-up to one of my favorite reads from 2020 and I’m super excited about diving into it.

So what am I reading this week? Well…it’s We Lie With Death by Devin Madson.

The empire has fallen and another rises in its place in the action-packed sequel to Devin Madson’s epic fantasy, We Ride the Storm.

Into Kisia’s conquered north, a Levanti empire is born.

Loyal to the new emperor, Dishiva e’Jaroven must tread the line between building a new life and clinging to the old. Only Gideon can lead them, but when he allies himself with a man returned from the dead it will challenge all she thinks she knows and everything she wants to believe.

Now empress of nothing, Miko is more determined than ever to fight for her people, yet with her hunt for allies increasingly desperate, she may learn too late that power lies not in names but in people.

Rah refused to bow to the Levanti emperor, but now abandoned by the Second Swords he must choose whether to fight for his people, or his soul. Will honor be his salvation, or lead to his destruction?

Sold to the Witchdoctor, Cassandra’s only chance of freedom is in his hands, but when her fate becomes inextricably linked to Empress Hana, her true nature could condemn them both.

There is no calm after the storm.”

I’m SOOOOOO excited to start this book. I know I kinda already said that, but it’s true. We Ride The Storm was a fav read of mine last year and I gave it 5 Stars. From the moment I set that book down I’ve been anticipating reading We Lie With Death. I can’t wait to see what paths the characters take because I really, really loved a couple of them (and if anything bad happens I’ll have to have words with Devin…words I say). It had warrior empresses, assassin’s with dead people in their head, troubled nomadic horse mounted warriors, the undead (apparently) and lots of betrayal and stabby stabby.

So yeah, I was already very pumped and then part-way through the year I saw the cover image from Orbit on Twitter and I just…yes. That’s all. Just yes.

I started the book yesterday and already I’m invested once again. The stakes are high and who knows where this will go. Book 3, We Cry For Blood comes out in August so I better get this one read and reviewed quick. A special thanks to Orbit for sending me a copy to read and review.

Have you read We Ride The Storm or We Lie With Death? If so what did you think? (No spoilers please)
