My next read is one I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. When Orbit posted the cover on Twitter I knew I wanted it even before I read the synopsis. And then I read the blurb and was like yep, just give me a big heaping plate of that. This one checks off a bunch of boxes for me and I’m struggling to make myself finish this post before I start reading.
So What am I reading? Well…it’s The Unbroken by C. L. Clark.

Touraine is a soldier. Stolen as a child and raised to kill and die for the empire, her only loyalty is to her fellow conscripts. But now, her company has been sent back to her homeland to stop a rebellion, and the ties of blood may be stronger than she thought.
Luca needs a turncoat. Someone desperate enough to tiptoe the bayonet’s edge between treason and orders. Someone who can sway the rebels toward peace, while Luca focuses on what really matters: getting her uncle off her throne.
Through assassinations and massacres, in bedrooms and war rooms, Touraine and Luca will haggle over the price of a nation. But some things aren’t for sale.

So above I said this book checks a lot of boxes for me. Here’s a quick list because I want to get to reading…
- Stunning cover
- Rebellion against empire
- Anti-colonialism
- Military fantasy
- Queernorm world
I just really can’t wait to start this read. I absolutely love military fantasy. I mean it has always been high on my list. Couple that with a dismantling of colonialism and rebellion at home and you’ve got me hooked. I noted the “queernorm world” from a comment by the author on Goodreads. This is important for me because everyone needs to be able to find themselves within the stories they love. Maybe one day our world will be more accepting. And that cover…wow…it’s really gorgeous. If you don’t already know this about me I’m really big on the importance of good covers as they are the first window through which we interpret a book. And this cover is giving me all kinds of powerful vibes.
I want to thank Orbit for granting my NetGalley Request for this read. I’m not going to go on and on in this post about what else I like or am looking forward to. Instead I’m gonna cut this short and start reading. I should have my review up before the publication date.
In the meantime has anyone else read The Unbroken? Anyone start it recently? Would love to know your thoughts or it is one you have on your want list. Let me know in the comments.
