I’m starting my second read of the year, and this one is for a book tour hosted by my friends at Storytellers On Tour. If you don’t know about @sot_tours you should check them out. They are a blog and Bookstagram tour service dedicated to sharing their love of indie fantasy and science fiction novels. This will be my third “tour” as a “roadie” with Storytellers On Tour and I’m pretty excited. The tour is January 31 – February 6, and my day is February 2, but I wanted to be sure to get the book read and the review written with time to spare.

So, what am I reading for this tour? Well…It’s Rise of One, by Dixon Reuel.

Then Keep Reading! “We have to be very careful, as those who age so slowly, not to fight upon past battlefields. In that, and maybe only in that, are we superior. To hold a grudge for a human lifespan, that is one thing. To hold a grudge throughout the whole of our lives, that would be an unlivable, untenable existence. So, we do not fight on past battlefields. We air our grievances as plainly as possible. We found, after centuries, we could live no other way.” — Salter, The Chronicler As zombies roamed, the earth went quiet. It is as if every critter knew that the only way to stay safe was to lay silent. Rise and his coven were running out of fresh blood to feed on. With only one human – albeit pampered beyond belief – at their disposal, there wasn’t enough food to go around. He must find other human survivors if they want to avoid succumbing to the blackness of oblivion. When the human survivors he rescued were infiltrated by Warwolves, an ancient order of vampire hunters, Rise soon realizes the danger he brought upon his kind. With the full intent to survive, Rise must purge all threats to his vampire race. The world, although decimated, is ripe for rule. If he wished to set history on a new path, he must triumph — starting with the rise of one individual. Will Rise triumph? Will he fall victim to the brain-dead that abound? Or will the Warwolves succeed in finally ridding the earth of his kind? Find out for yourself in “Rise of One”. “Rise of One” is the first installment of the Blood Brute Series by Irish award-winning and best-selling writer Dixon Reuel. In this gripping page-turner, readers will: – Come alive as every twist and turn take you on a brand new path towards a damned world filled with famished vampires and ruthless zombies – Yearn for more as Rise and his coven fight for the survival of their kind — whatever it takes – And so much more!

When SOT put out the word about the Rise of One tour I jumped on it for a few reasons.

  • I love reading indie/self-published fantasy and love helping my friends at SOT
  • I’m wanting to increase the number of indie/self-published fantasy books I read this year to about 50% of my total
  • Post apocalyptic vampires and zombies.

I hear you asking, “do we need another vampire novel?” And the answer is, “yes, we do.” I also hear you asking, “do we need another zombie book?” And my answer again is, “yes, we do.”

Yes to both. I love a good vampire story and what’s not to like about zombies? And I’m always hear for a good post apocalypse.

Rise of One just sounds like a really cool and interesting take on this subgenre. At first glance with a vampire or vampires as the protagonist are they the good guys? But they are keeping a human as a feedbag so maybe not? Like, I don’t know what to think about the possibilities or the implications for me as a reader and I LIKE IT!

Oh and I love the cover! That cat’s eye with zombies in the iris…how cool and creepy is that? Yeah, it works for me and is part of what sold me.

So far the reviews on Goodreads and Amazon look pretty good with both platforms giving it an average rating above 4 stars. Hopefully I enjoy it as much or more as those other readers. I’ll let you know.
