Yesterday I posted my 2018 Year In Review so today it’s time to settle on my goals for 2019. I always hesitate with these kinds of lists because they seem to get blown out of the water pretty quick but it does give me some things to focus on. I don’t want this list to be too long or difficult. It needs to be something I can manage. I’m not setting goals for number of books to read, or anything related to reading new releases. I always want to read new releases. OK, let’s get to the list…here we go…
Get Caught Up On My Reviews
Last year as you all know I got behind on my reviews and never caught up. I have no idea if the same thing will happen again this year but I hope not. What I’d like to do early on this year is catch up on some of those reviews I missed. I know I won’t be able to go back and review every book I read and didn’t post about in 2018 but there are a handful I’d really like to get to. I make no promises as to the number of these I do but I’ll be disappointed if I don’t get at least a few done. I have to be careful though that I don’t get behind on current reads because I’m working on old ones.
Open The Blog To Review Requests Again
When things started to get crazy last year I got behind and closed the blog to review requests. I hated this because I got a number of requests I had to say no to. I’d like to open the blog to requests again. I may open it up in phases if I start to get too many requests to handle. I don’t want to get into a situation where I’ve got more than a few at any one time so that I can stay caught up.
Related to this, I really want to get back to requesting ARCs from publishers and Net Galley. I stopped both when things got hectic last year.
Read More Self-Pub/Indie Books
If you followed me at all last year you know I discovered a new love for self-pub fantasy. I read some really good books and found some new authors whose every word I want to devour. I’ll be reading more self-pub/indie fantasy this year. I’ve got a bunch of books on my TBR and a bunch more on my list to buy. If you follow me on Twitter you’ll see me posting a lot related to self-pubs and probably the #SPFBO.
Another Self-Pub Fantasy Month?
Hmm…I’d love to give Self-Pub Fantasy Month another go. I was super excited about the idea last year and it generated a lot of interest here on the blog. Life got in the way and it kind of fizzled out which still bothers me a lot. I’m not making a firm commitment to this yet, but I’ll tell you now I would really like to give this another go. If anyone else is still interested in participating in this as an event let me know.
Finish Up Series I’ve Started
I’ve got a number of series I’ve started reading and not caught up with or finished. One goal for this year will definitely be to get caught up on series I’ve started that the author has not finished, or to finish those the author has completed. I feel like I’ve got too many story threads hanging out in my mind that need resolution.
The Dragonlance books, specifically the Chronicles and Legends series were the books that got me into fantasy way back in Middle School. This was back in the 90’s. I’m old and still have my old books and cherish them. At some point last year I decided I wanted to read the series again, but this time the entire library. I looked it up and there are over one hundred. I know some are of greater quality than others and I know it will take forever to accomplish this goal but I’m gonna try it. This won’t be one I finish this year or even in the next couple of years. It will have to be an ongoing one.
Another series of books I want to read more of are those written for the Warhammer 40K game universe. For those that don’t know, Warhammer 40K is a miniature wargaming system set in the far future of humanity. You buy models, paint them up, set up tables with terrain and roll some dice to see who wins the battles. Warhammer 40K is often attributed with the origin of the term/genre “grimdark” as one of it’s oft-quoted lines from the lore within the rule book is “In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war.”
Well, there are a crap-ton of fiction that has been published filling in much of the backstory and lore of the game. I’ve read a few of these (the first three of the Horus Heresy) and I want to read more. My boys and I have started playing the game and the books add a lot of flavor to it. I don’t know if I’ll review all of these but you may see some.
Along with Dragonlance and Warhammer I want to get caught up on my Star Wars reads. I need some pew pew to go along with all the stabby stabby. For this goal I”m only focusing on the new books, not the Legends. I may start a re-read of the ones I already have just to get a refresher on the state of the galaxy.
Clean Up The Blog
I need to organize things a little better. I need to update my science fiction and fantasy pages where I list all my reviews at minimum. I may even debate a new look. Or I might not. If I continue with Self-Published Fantasy Month I’ll want a better page devoted to it.
Reduce The Size of My TBR
Who am I kidding…this will never happen. I’ll just keep adding more.
Well that’s it. I’ve probably already bit off more than I can chew. I hope you’ll be able to meet all your reading/blogging goals for the year. Now to get started…
