Waiting On Wednesday: The Grey Bastards

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and continued now by Tressa at Wishful Endings under the heading “Can’t Wait Wednesday” where readers and bloggers share and discuss books they are excited about reading and which have generally not yet been released. I’m sticking with “Waiting On Wednesday” just because I like the way it rolls off the tongue.

The Grey Bastards

Author: Jonathan French
Publisher: Crown (In U.S.) and Orbit UK (In UK obviously)
Series: The Lot Lands (Book 1)
Length: 432 pages
Publication Date: June 19, 2018 (U.S.) / June 21, 2018 UK

“Call them outcasts, call them savages—they’ve been called worse, by their own mothers—but Jackal is proud to be a Grey Bastard.

He and his fellow half-orcs patrol the barren wastes of the Lot Lands, spilling their own damned blood to keep civilized folk safe. A rabble of hard-talking, hog-riding, whore-mongering brawlers they may be, but the Bastards are Jackal’s sworn brothers, fighting at his side in a land where there’s no room for softness.

And once Jackal’s in charge—as soon as he can unseat the Bastards’ tyrannical, seemingly unkillable founder—there’s a few things they’ll do different. Better.

Or at least, that’s the plan. Until the fallout from a deadly showdown makes Jackal start investigating the Lot Lands for himself. Soon, he’s wondering if his feelings have blinded him to ugly truths about this world, and the Bastards’ place in it.

In a quest for answers that takes him from decaying dungeons to the frontlines of an ancient feud, Jackal finds himself battling invading orcs, rampaging centaurs, and grubby human conspiracies alike—along with a host of dark magics so terrifying they’d give even the heartiest Bastard pause.

Finally, Jackal must ride to confront a threat that’s lain in wait for generations, even as he wonders whether the Bastards can—or should–survive.
Delivered with a generous wink to Sons of Anarchy, featuring sneaky-smart worldbuilding and gobs of fearsomely foul-mouthed charm, The Grey Bastards is a grimy, pulpy, masterpiece—and a raunchy, swaggering, cunningly clever adventure that’s like nothing you’ve read before.”

OK, what doesn’t sound good about this one? I’ve been waiting on it since I first saw an announcement at the beginning of the year. I didn’t know anything about it at the time, but it turns out it already has a history. It was first published back in 2015 as a self-published/independent publisher format. It was entered in the 2016 Self Published Fantasy Blog Off hosted by author Mark Lawrence who says in his Goodreads review, “Out of the 300 fantasy books that entered my self-published fantasy book contest #SPFBO for 2016 this book was the runaway winner!!” That’s some impressive credentials.

Here’s a few other reviews by other bloggers I follow if you’re interested:

Wol at The Tome & Tankard Inn

“…this is a rollicking adventure with some genuinely shocking surprises and a lot of laughs and excitement.”

Wol also concocted a drink to go with the book (as Wol does). It’s called a Hogwash and has bourbon, maple syrup…and BACON! “Live in the saddle, DIE ON THE HOG” as they say. Click here for the recipe.

Kristin at Superstardrifter says, “Guys…this book is fucking magic!”

Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek loved it too…

“The Grey Bastards is bold, brash and crude and filled with excitement, heart and feeling. It is riotous and rowdy oozing more machismo than Razor Ramon in his heyday and it will give you a shit ton of fun for your buck! You will find yourself balls deep in The Grey Bastards and be loving it!”

If anyone else has already read or have it on your list to buy or pre-order chime in with your thoughts and let me know if it’s going on your TBR.
